Packing canvas orders for shipping
Plan package contents for rolled, stretched and framed canvas. Check outside dimensions, dimensional weight and shipment records before dispatch.

Shipping preparation starts with the products actually inside each package. Two canvas orders with the same front dimensions can need different packages when one is rolled and the other is framed. Build the package list after confirming the product format; do not copy the product dimensions directly into a carrier quote.
Choose packaging around the finished product
- Rolled canvas: confirm the producer’s rolling and surface-protection instructions, choose suitable rigid packaging, and check the end closures.
- Stretched canvas: protect the face and corners and prevent the frame from moving inside the outer package.
- Framed canvas: check protection around projecting frame edges and use cushioning suited to the finished piece.
Do not assume canvas packaging is also suitable for glass or another fragile material. Confirm the packing method with the producer and the carrier’s current requirements for the specific item.
Record the packed outside dimensions
Measure the closed package at its widest points and weigh it with all protective material included. A 50 × 70 cm artwork might occupy a larger package. The rate request needs the package measurements, not the visible print size. Measure and weigh each package separately in a multi-package shipment.
Why a light canvas can have a higher chargeable weight
Carriers can consider both actual weight and the space a package occupies. FedEx’s dimensional-weight explanation states that the higher of dimensional and actual weight is used. The divisor, units, rounding and service rules must match the carrier quote; do not transfer a domestic “desi” calculation into an international quote unchanged.
A simple volume comparison shows why depth matters: a 60 × 80 × 10 cm box occupies 48,000 cm³; increasing its depth to 20 cm gives 96,000 cm³. The volume doubles even if the contents weigh the same. This is a volume example, not a shipping price. Reduce unused space only when the artwork remains properly protected.
Make a package-to-item list
| Package | Contents | Check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Item A · framed canvas | Frame and corner protection |
| 2 | Items B and C · rolled prints | Confirm both items fit safely; check quantity |
Combining products may reduce the package count, but it can also increase dimensions or damage risk. Compare only packing options that the producer can actually prepare. Keep the package-to-item list with the order so a missing item can be traced to a specific package.
Before creating and attaching the label
- Check destination country, postcode, city, recipient details and any required contact information.
- Confirm the service, package count, outside measurements and packed weight.
- Match each label and tracking number to its own package.
- Record any documents requested for the shipment and confirm dispatch with the producer.
- Check the storefront shipment update separately. A label alone does not prove carrier pickup or an Etsy update.
Nino Canvas shipping management keeps available quotes, labels and tracking with the order. Return to production tracking if an item is not ready, or use the print file checklist before production.
